One of the things I have learnt in my Psychology classes is that humans will resort to anything so as not to lose the “self”

Sexual abuse victims could develop multiple personalities to hide from the over-riding pain of the assault. Some over-intellectualize their actions to prevent themselves from feeling anger and sadness. Others even go to the extent of burying the incident so deep that they forget it ever happened.
